About Us

G.E.M. For Guyana

G.E.M stands for “Girls’ education matters”. This non-profit was created not only with the intention of providing scholarships and funds, but to also change the lives and societal norms for women in Guyana. In Guyana, various issues prevent women from continuing, and moving further within their education. Some of these issues include societal expectations, sexual violence, harassment and expenses. The idea that Guyanese women must marry early and become householders without pursuing post-secondary education is often introduced early into their lives.

This education movement aims to change these societal norms, and normalize women continuing their education, despite the societal and monetary barriers they may face. In addition, we hope to encourage Guyanese girls to stay in schools and remove any barriers that are preventing them from receiving their education. Through doing so, women in Guyana who wish to pursue further education will be able to accomplish what they desire, and exceed within their classroom, and the society.

Meet the Founder!

Hi! My name is Bhumika. This non-profit has been a vision that I am truly happy to bring to life. Growing up, I have always believed that giving back to my community is of utmost importance, and have seen this through following the footsteps of my parents. Through this movement, I hope to give back to the women of Guyana, and brighten the future of Guyana as a whole.
